Perhaps after taking a day or two to reflect on the day we can post some of the salient themes here. I like exchanging thoughts and impressions about the test with other people. I find that someone invariably noted something I missed or has a different perspective that gets me thinking. A lot of things stuck out for me but the three things I appreciated most were:

1. The trust and honesty I saw from everyone participating.
2. The interactions between different people from different clubs who maybe didn't know each other that well but were working together and sharing their spirit, time and attention. I was verklempt.
3. The funniest moment for me was when, during a segment of jumping kicks, sah-bum-nim Alonso said, "They should be getting better, not worse." Maybe it was only amusing to me because I wasn't kicking at the time but I'm going to be hearing it in my head for the next few weeks.

There are a bunch more but I need time to let stuff marinate. Anybody else have any thoughts to share?

Hey there,
I posted a ton of notes from post discussions under training... Feel free to make notes or comments there as well.

It was a wonderful day and always a pleasure to see everyone try and learn and grow from the experience.

Thoughts that stood out to me ... Most of them are taken from comments made by Master D'Amico and from the special class on Sunday.

1) "Get in the zone and have fun with it" (Master Nitschke)

2) There was a reference to "normal people" by a student at the end of white/yellow belt test. Response: We are all normal. There is nothing abnormal about having faults (injury, shortcomings).

3) Keep exploring your short comings and make a list of them. Fully understand them, accept them and take steps to improve them if that is what you need to do to grow.

4) Unknown faults (shortcomings) cause anxiety to you when they surface unexpectedly. So identify them ...

5) When a teacher/parent has shortcomings/insecurities unknown to them, he/she will pass this on to his/her students/kids. This is dangerous.

6) "Inward thinking" cause nervousness, anxiety and pain ... "outward thinking" brings happiness to people around you and to you.

7) Create families wherever you go - new town, new work, street, plane etc.

8) The "outside" (physical aspects) can be brought along through hard training. Anyone can do it given some time. What's important is the "inside" - mind and spirit.

9) All "Aims to Achieve" in TKD are mental. (Greg)

10) Think long term when dealing with injury. TKD is forever. (Greg, Darin)

11) Injuries can be physical and mental. (Sahbumnim Alonso)

12) Take a break if you truly need it especially when dealing with injuries of mind. Listen to the negative feelings instead of suppressing them. Be true to yourself (Sahbumnim Alonso).

13) We (Teachers) are responsible to our students. Be present even if you cannot lead warm-ups/class due to injury (Greg).

14) Do not confuse conflict and love. Those are two different things. You may have conflict with your loved ones ... it does not mean you love them less. (Master D'Amico)

15) KIHAP!!!!

A very good question to ask ourselves: How can you teach someone who irritates you? (derived from comments by Master Nitschke in the special class)

These are some of the gems that stayed with me. Please add more as you remember them.

Another one from Master D'Amico on failure:

An 39-year old person wanting to get married could say, "I'm going to get married now, right now." But, that doesn't mean Mr. or Ms. Right is going to walk in the door at that point. No, they must keep trying. All failures are not our own fault.
